Our company has just announced that when we relocate to our new facility (we currently have two sites, one new owned facility (5 mins from my house ) and one ancient leased place (where I work unfortunately and 40 mins from my house )) that we will benefit from a half million pound VOIP package
Nice

would require the whole internet network to have routers that would prioritise VOIP packets - and i cant see that happening, would cost a fortune

well there still going to need PSTN gear for all of the calls outside of BT's VOIP network - so i dont see how its going to save them money
although, i suppose its the first step, and if the rest of the telco's go VOIP then they would probably end up sharing PSTN equipment for international calls etc etc But still, i cant see it all happening by 2008 - its only 3 years away

Its going to cost alot of money but is very far from impossible. Alot of it is already possible when you come to think of it.
It will just involve mass PBX reconfiguration and upgrading and they already have a solution for integrating VOIP with analog and digital PSTN circuits.
BT's approach though is to replace the entire PSTN.
They reckon once they have completed the PSTN replacement that it will be possible for them to easily deliver fibre optic lines directly to customers
Yes it does seem a long way off, but it will get done, fuck me history has gone from some string and 2 cups to what we have today

I'm working on a project here this year to see if the company would benefit from this, TDMoIP is the way forwards, can use your existing PBX's too

What system is that adam?
You can get the same sort of thing using a 3com NBX and something like citel links and use the old norstar meridian phones.

if you have a look at www.rad.com.
They've got 2 products, Their IPmux which doesn't compress voice and is designed to run over a LAN or very fast WAN and the Vmux which can compress 30 voice channels down to 192kb/s approx and can go out over a DSL line.
