Be careful with those SBD double valve springs Adam. When one of mine shattered and destroyed the engine, SBD told me that they're only good for about 1000 miles before needing replacement. No more SBD valve gear for me

why you want a winged/baffles sump?
i understand so stop oil surges at high rev (from having a quick read on MIG) i am thinking abit like a cheaper version of a dry sump.
but that the wings for?

no idea about the wings....

Its not like a dry sump, but i suppose it has the same effect, to remove oil starvation.

The baffles is to ensure there is oil for the pickup pipe to 'pickup'. If you have a normal sump, and are hoofing it round corners.... the oil will surge to one side of the sump..... away from the pickup

...the baffles will slow down this surge...

in the pic above..... from the way i understand it...

The sump has had a 2nd 'floor' ( )added. The pickup goes through the big hole, into the lower resevoir. The lower resevoir has less height for the oil to surge.

As std there is a baffle in the sump, but i cannot r'ber how it compares to the pic above.... i might have one lying with my spare sump.... but its all mucky

bit more on baffled sumps here.... (a bit more like what i was on about )

http://www.mi16.nl/mods_sump.htm

based on Mi16 engine though

Original Sump
The original sump of the early Mi16 (D6C) engines is an ordinary alloy oil pan, nothing special. Compared to the steel version of 8-valve XU engines, a couple of things can be noticed. First of all, being made of alloy in stead of steel, the Mi16 version has a greater overall wall thickness to achieve the needed strength. Secondly, as it is a cast item instead of pressed, it was possible to add some extra features to the design. On the outside, cooling ribs are added to increase the outer surface area and therefore help keep the oil temperature lower. On the inside, some extra ribs are added to help oil flow towards the oil pump's suction entry.

When driving a car, equipped with this sump, through long and/or fast corners you may notice that at some point the oil pressure will start to drop. This is due to the cornering forces (lateral G's) making the oil sling to one side of the engine, away from the oil pump, resulting in air being sucked in aswell as oil. This causes a drop in oil pressure and may ultimately result in bearing damage when ignored.

Swindon used Schmitthelm springs, which is what I'm using. They're single springs but good for 8.5Krpm. Schmitthelm springs were/are used in the Rally/Touring cars and are generally acknowledged to be bombproof. SBD's double springs are supplied by Kent, and they are made a company called Issky I believe. Supposed to be a 'medium quality spring'. I'm sure they'll last more than 1000 miles, but just be very, very careful!

I quizzed SBD about the durability of their springs and (in a nutshell) they told me to fcuk off because I'd put too many miles on them (5000). I've since come to the conclusion that the sun doesn't shine out of their arses
