I'm new to the music production stuff  my mate said you want a Mac as they re shit hot for that kind of stuff ...

aye, was just thinking mate, music production on that?? 
you cant install any D/A cards, so that rules out use any half decent soundcard - ie: digidesign gear, creamware etc.
Plus upgrades are a pain in the arse apparently, and hard drive space is something you really really need, especially if you play to do recordings.
Plus if your doing alot of digital stuff, like using vsts, then you will need to buy (special shop is limited for plugins on macs) all of your plugins again to work on macs, thats if they do them for macs, (one problem that is stopping me getting a mac, and with digidesign stuff, like protools use RTAS plugins which are serious mulla).
However, for the price of one of them, i would ebay for a G4 - will be alot better and you can then start to use it as a propper music production machine - ie: run OS9 (sod OSX, isnt need for music production) 
Although a dual cpu G5 would be lush

Macs are the bollox, but tbh - there only really useful if you do audio work, and using something like logic/protools. And even then, when i was using one for music production, a 500MHz G3 (would crap itself when trying to record 10 inputs and play around 20 tracks out of audio  ), i still managed to crash it a few times, but mainly my own fault
But macs are a lot, lot LOT better at audio work that pcs, and probably plugin work too <- but like i said, you'll need a few grand to afford a decent set of synths, mastering etc plugins
If its going to be sampled based, plugins, soundfounts etc then i would stick to a pc running windows 2000 (unless you have stuff that NEED xp, like digidesign soundcards), with two DRIVES, NOT partitions (one for windows, the other with music software, plugins, samples etc and keep it defragged) and loads it up with ram (the more the better)

Macs Rule, i use my 2001 867 quicksilver as a video edit suite and it rocks.
If you want extra space on a mac get a LaCie Firewire Hard Drive, I use mine to digitise DV footage and rendering and it is sweet. In my experience no PC can keep up with a mac for the kind of work they do.

In regards to Mac's being 'hot for music production, its generally said that they're easy to use, plus Logic Audio is only now on Mac.
There are many equivalents on PC, including Cubase or even Fruity Loops Studio now.
A Mac mini will noway be as good as a G5 - its all about RAM and a high-quality sound card.

For you music peeps, i picked up a copy of Sound on Sound today (May issue) and there is a nice 4 page review on the mini mac for music production, and comparing it against similar macs - like G4s etc
And it wasnt that hot of a review though Basically ended with the reviewer saying that it gets pretty expensive once you start adding more ram (which you need, as the standard 256mb is JUST enough to use OSX) and other bits and bobs.
Mav 3000 - I agree, there are equivalent software for pcs, especially protools (which runs on both 98/XP and Mac systems) - which is absolute bollocks on my XP system using a digi001, although like i said - your never going to get anywhere near the power of audio recording on a pc as a mac.
But its all down to money, if you have the cash to burn, then i would recommend a mac with some decent plugins - and it will handle all of your sampled, plugin, audio work <- but you going to spend around 5k atleast!
But if your on a budget the pc is the way, especially considering you have the "special" shop which WILL help you out in starting out with decent plugins/software etc 
although Fruity Loops !??! not exactly professional software Then again it doesnt stop me producing most of my stuff in that
