Technically it's only a virus if you have a virus on your machine?....

your right, although its probably due to a virus
if it was working, and it aint now then its prolly a registry cock up or something

easiest thing to do, is do a google for bypassing registration on XP (means going into SAFE mode and pissing about with registry) - or infact, go into safe mode anyways and see how far you get in there. If it works then do a virus scan and see what happens

Its not caused by a virus, but can be caused by spyware. Search assistant is a known bastard for causing it. Ive had two machines from customers with this problem.

Way to fix is by using the recovery console from the windows CD, and you have to do some playing about.

If you done a spyware scan before this started happening, your gonna have to reinstall XP, as if you have cleared out the registry info for userinit.exe, you've got no chance of sorting it out via the recovery console. Using a backup of your registry may work, but it will be easier to reinstall.

The problem lies with userinit.exe and if you didnt run a spyware scan before the problem started happening, this will probably work:

Boot into the recovery console

Copy USERINIT.EX_ from your D:\i386 directory to your C:\Windows\System32 directory

Delete the original userinit.exe file in your C:\Windows\System32 directory

Rename userinit.ex_ to userinit.exe

If that doesnt work:

boot back into the recovery console and delete wsaupdater.exe from your C:\Windows\System32 directory

rename userinit.exe to wsaupdater.exe

Hope this helps even tho i dont think ur gonna be able to do it!
