Turn off System Restore

This will prevent your computer from saving a restore point with the worm still activated.

Note: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Select the Turn off System Restore check box as shown in this illustration:

Run the Blaster Removal Tool

1. Download the removal tool from this address: http://helpdesk.luther.edu/antivirus/virusinfo/Blaster.exe
2. Launch the program and follow the directions.

Reactivate System Restore

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Uncheck the Turn off System Restore check box.

You missed quite a helpful step in the above instructions, and that's how to cancel the 60-second timer if it starts:

1. Click Start.
2. Click Run...
3. Type shutdown -a
