gonna get some 15" sxi rims and i was wondering which would be the better tyre size?
195/50 or 195/45
and its gonna be lowerd 40 or 50 mm

i'm down 60mm with 195x50's on, no scrubbage ET49 offset though

195/50 are much cheaper and give better handling in theory.
Plus a better ride on low sus.

^^^ he's not wrong, cant fault the way mine drives with 15's on, runnings 14's atm coz my others are being refurbed and the ride is utter garbage

Thats what i was wondering also, because im getting some alloys which are 15s and are 50 but people said try and get 45 so i aint sure which to get

45 profile looks better imo, not quite sure how a 50 profile tyre handles better? I always thought less flex in sidewall better handling. Im sure I will politely advised otherwise if im wrong.

Its ture the lower the better, to a point though.
"This is important in as much that, in order to get maximum grip from a tyre, you must have a load that will "hold" it on to the surface up to and over the point where the rubber compound is incapable of resisting the shear forces acting upon it. Inflation pressure is one way that handling characteristics can be changed quite dramatically particularly as it not only effects the point loading and contact patch shape stability but also influences side wall stability and the resistance to sudden breakaway"

Now the point being made is less tire deflection is good. and a lower side wall causes less deformation of the sidewall, but when it gets too low, it doesn't flex and will just "let go" more suddenly, give very unprogressive handling. a 50 is a better compramise between lateral G's before slippage and feeling when it will happen.
This is further backed up as competition rubber for 15" rims (for cars like ours) is normally 50 sidewall.
I'm not saying that 45's are bad, but if your'e after the pursut of cornering faster 50's are the better choice.
But for asthetics 45's are good, but who can seem then when you shoot past eh

i suppose just like springs softer spring gives better initial grip but will break away a lot faster,

lol well i'm gettin the sxi rims and was lookin at tyres for them. i have decided to have goodyear eagle F!'s as i have had them before and just got rid of the one i had for my 16" rims.
now the prices are £33.13 for a 50 profile and £52.45 for a 45 profile so thanks to you j1400 i will be gettin the 50 profile and saving myself 80 odd quid.

Yeah they break away sonner but in a more pradicable fasion, less of a snap effect, it's all about balance.
Glad I could help , F1 are a good choice, I think i'm going to try the new toyo T1-R's this time out, I'm hearing good things about them.

ive got 195/45/16 toyo proxie t1-s lowered 40mm awsome grip theres hardly any tred in the rear and it doesnt slip

yer i heard some great things with the toyo's but a mate just had them on his corsa and they have lasted for like 3 months well soft compound but grip like fuckin glue

Yep you got it Nath I'm only trackdaying my car, so I'm bothered about mileage.
My last set fo tyres uniroyal 440's lasted 4k of abuse which is pretty good I think.

For sure, I'd rather trade off dry grip for more wet grip so the car "felt" the same in all conditions (extreme conditions aside)
