Just remember that if you want to edit your videos then unless you get a 'DV-IN' enabled camera your only way to get the video off the PC in decent quality is by using a DVD burner

Yeah you use the firewire to transfer the edited footage back to the camcorder but only if it has DV-IN, this feature tends to be on the mid to high end vid cams

Its got it on the one I have found and ive looked at the instructions online as well and its in there

My thinking is:

Old 8mm Camcorders record at about 320x288 resolution.

MiniDV (DV1) records at 720x576 - ie almost tqice the reolution.

My DV camcorder looks TV quality compared to our old one, when I put video onto DVDs.

It depends on the camcorder, the CCD more than the format of media itself.
