It's a Renault thing, both our Megane and Laguna have brakes like that!
As for people saying they're shit, I think we've had 1 problem in the 2 years we've had the Laguna, and no problems with the Megane. Both 1.9 DTi's, both lovely to drive.

No, Renault seem to love brakes that want to throw you through the windscreen, especially on the diesels. Once you get used to them though, you'll hate the brakes on any other car.
