That's a bit crap -- when I joined the companies payroll I was paid at the next available pay day (15th of each month), so I worked 2 weeks with no pay...
...but I just paid for stuff out the golden hello...
Can you not ask them for an advance?

Normally the offer you an advance.
I started with my currenly company and just missed the payroll, so they gave me a cheque for the 2 weeks if worked, then paid me normally the following month
