uninstall the broadband jump cd shite and do a full spyware cleanout mate - you dont need it
Then go over this guide >> HERE <<
Also bookmark, cableforum.co.uk as its a great site for NTL help - on telephone, TV and broadband and it keeps you updated on NTL feature plans etc (ie: new tv channels, broadband upgrades etc etc)

Right, uninstall the broadband jump cd stuff as you dont need it Then run something like spybot and a registry cleaner.
Then, plug in your patch cable between the CM (cable modem) and pc, switch your system off and reboot your CM (ie: switch it off, leave for a minute, switch back on). Then leave your CM on for about 5minutes until you have 3 solid lights on the left - one may flash slightly). Boot pc back up.
The go Start > Run, type 'cmd'.
A dos box will load, type 'ipconfig /all'.....should bring up a list of info about your NIC card etc.
If the IP address is 169, then type 'ipconfig /release'..leave it for a minute, then type 'ipconfig /renew'.
Then open your browser, goto https://autoreg.autoregister.net/ follow it through, when it asks for a serial number type 'ntl-ct8-cj486'.
if you read the link i gave you it states what to do mate
edit - as for settings for network card etc, under the TCP/IP settings make sure 'obtain ip address auto' is ticked and so is 'obtain DNS server auto' is also checked.
And if this all doesnt work then you will either need to get a straight through network cable or a crossover cable (the opposite to what you have now) and/or your network card is buggered, and i would try borrowing a working one or go buy another

You need DNS but you don't need to specify the address as it will be given to you by NTL.
IP address should be also though, in the place where your network card setup is saying obtain DNS address automatically, it should also be saying obtain IP address automatically.

sounds like you got a temp lease ip address. Dont know if NTL require you to register a MAC address, think you need to enter one on the self care page or over the phone with them.
Best to make sure they got the correct one for you.
(you can get your MAC address by typing ipconfig /all at the command prompt.

ive done EVERYTHING u have all said apart from the :
Then, plug in your patch cable between the CM (cable modem) and pc, switch your system off and reboot your CM (ie: switch it off, leave for a minute, switch back on). Then leave your CM on for about 5minutes until you have 3 solid lights on the left - one may flash slightly). Boot pc back up.

Then open your browser, goto https://autoreg.autoregister.net/ follow it through, when it asks for a serial number type 'ntl-ct8-cj486'.
witch imgoing to try tomorrow morning...
might just get a bloody new PC

why get a new pc
if it is the NIC card, then its about 10 quid from pcworld, yet a new pc will set you back about 600 quid plus
eitherway, it would only take you about 5mins to do the rest, so i would try that mate
chris e - when you register (via the autoregister.net website), your mac address is taken down and then is matched against your ntl account etc for future reference

Have you tried what you said you were going to try above?
Also are you using your Mum's PC on the same connection?

are you saying, 1 pc is connected via usb to CM and the other is via ethernet to the CM????
if so, theres your reason why it isnt working
if not, then look on the back of your pc to see if you have a network card (NIC) installed (ie: find a socket that will fit the supplied network cable) and make sure it isnt the 56k modem if you have one. If you dont have one then you need to go out and buy one, if you do then follow the steps i gave you
