It's ok to mix cheap shit like Smirnoff with lemonade or something, only cos it's shit though.... Good stuff is to be drunk frozen, over ice. On one exception. Finlandia lime flavoured is good with Coke... Words of wisdom there

however Finlandia stuff is, mate gave me a shot of that stuff ages ago - although i still pulled faces for a good half hour

Vodka shouldn't be drank in shots. The flavour is too strong hence the funny faces. Try sipping it over ice
