sounds to me like its dodgy memory, or the processor is over heating....
if the memory was b0rked the PC wouldnt start at all.
i said dodgy, not fucked if its dodgy stick(s) it will cause lock ups and freezes...if the ram or cpu was totally screwed then it wouldnt boot. Hence why i also said if the cpu is over heating as that will cause freezes.
It could also be a dodgy PSU spiking causing it to lock up.
however, go into the bios and disable onboard stuff - like sound, graphics, lans, serial/printer ports, everything that you dont need. Also unplug everything bar your mouse keyboard, and take out the sound card and other cards....then do a full dos format of the disk and reinstall
tbh, i would say take the mobo back and get something like an Abit Gigabyte, as WTF is an elite motherboard
eitherway im putting my money on the memory, overheating cpu or dodgy mobo
Edit! Some Links -
Review (has a few memory pointers)
Mobo website
Forum - has info about board etc etc

I would also have to agree with RAM issues here...
if you just bunged in some 256mb RAM which you found lying about, its probs not quick enough to support the A64, say if its PC2100 or some other shite like that...
Alot of people say 'just 'get 1gb of cheap PC2100 RAM, it will be fine', etc... but they dont realise it HAS to be upto the FSB which is set, and the A64's are bloody fast & have high expectations...
Dont skimp on the RAM, and get memtest86 & see what it says
http://www.memtest86.com/
Dom... Elite boards are pure crap, there is no doubt about it! there like a cheap ECS brand... says it all really!

its is an ECS board mate

I know its ECS, but very cheap version
I used to have a K7VTA3 which died after about 8 months... there really poor boards!
Usual reasons from what I heard is poor quality voltage regulators & caps on the board, aswell as bad BIOS revisions...

All Athlons run extremely hot compared to P4's, make sure it has adequate cooling, nice fat heatsink and fast fan. As said before, make sure memory is correct type, and 256 should not cause the massive failures you describe. I ran XP on a celeron 400 with 128mb ram, so your should run ok with 256. Is the ram DDR?
If all else fails, i am inclined to say there is a major fault with the motherboard or chipset. Can you flash the BIOS at all? Downloaded latest drivers for the chipset? northbridge/southbridge running cool?

Try without the 256 ram in to eliminate it.

hmmm that's strange though, I know XP and the 64 will be memory intensive but surely the minimum would have been 256mb. Oh well glad to hear it's working smoothly.
