whatever floats your boat.
i don't like them because they sound ghey and people that ride them tend to be chav orientated

they are cheaper than a sports/sport touring bike though.

The R1 is one of the fastest bikes on the planet so as a first bike you'd last about an hour before killing yourself

If you dont want the hairdrier sound of a 2 stroke then go for a 400cc sports bike (one of the best handling bikes ever) de-tuned to 33hp, only availible as imports though the ZXR 400 is availible in UK spec

This man Speaks the truth.. i have ridden my uncles YZF 600 Thundercat which is basically an older R6 and lets just say it was mind numbing in performance and Handling...

the R1 can do 0-60 in 3 seconds it has the largest engine capacity out of all hardcore sports bikes, it's also the first bike to use a FULL aluminum chassis.

Its Yamahas quickest, fastest, most powerful and lightest bike on the market if you want to ride fine but prepared to get biten a few times

You aint restricted to a 125 for 2 years only 33BHP. You can still get a 600 bike but it has to be restricted with a kit. 400's a popular choice but most bike don't run quite so well with the restriction. You'd be better getting a dedicated 125. Sayiing that though on a restricted license you can't even have a full power RS125

r6 is basically r1's little brother. easier to insure too.

You best sit down if you havn't had a quote, I have 5 years no claims and an R6 and it's getting there  . For a first bike not even the R6 would be recommended. Saying that the throttle works both ways. It's a lot of plastic and expensive parts to fuck up if you drop it.

Yamaha's YZF R1 is fast but not the fastest bike on the market, as drew said the Suzuki GSX1300R (Hayabusa) is probably the fastest road bike.
But the Kawazaki ZX12 follows closely behind this.

Im planning on buying this:

Not really a first bike as i have had quite a few in the past. but will be the biggest/fastest bike i have owned, previously a Suzuki GSF600S.

pmsl @ at some of the suggestions, i would suggest a honda bros 650 as a first road bie, there 33 bhp, but are one of the bets hanfling bike ever made due to there ally frame etc, also designed the single sided swingarm way before ducai and genraly were way ahaed of there time

easy swap to put the africa twin 750 engine in them, import some styling godies from hiperform in the us and you have a very very good bike

2 yrs after u pass ur test u can insure a big bike.
R1's are awesome, bout 160bhp,
GSXR1000 is the most awesome, bout 180bhp.
if u are thinkin bout first bikes cheap, get an aprilia RS125, my old one cost me bout 900 quid, then me and my dad tuned it to bout 30-32bhp, almost full race. was quick as fook till u hit limiter in top.

i am putting an R1 engine or GSXR1000 engine into my Go-Kart. maybe with nitrous (my bro wants sell me his kit)
will be bout 120kgs at most(2 lads can pick it up)
with bout 160 bhp or 210with nitrous!!!!!

Yeah its either as soon as your 21 or two years after passing test, depending which route you take..

Don't get an R1 as your first bike

A 400cc road bike would be plenty fast enough..
