when assigning a private plate, do you have to retain the old one?

You don't have to although you can if you want.

Does retaining the old one make it easier to take the private plate off the car again?Or doesn't it make a difference?

its a 51 plate on at the moment, and just wondered whether i'd need to retain it for when i, eventually, take the new plate off.
or will the 51 plate be automatically re-assigned

Nope, and its a bit expensive and pointless unless you're doing something with the reg that is currently on the car.

9 times out of 10 it'll go back on the same reg, although the DVLA say otherwise.

Mine have gone back to the original plates three times, as did my brothers and his wifes.

Either your old one or another 51 plate.

Doesn't make much odds and even less if you're trading it in so you're not buying the plastics.
