I use Adaware and Spybot and although they usually find a lot there are some things that they don't catch. Best thing if its very bad is to reinstall unfortunately.

This is true, I had an infected pc at work. Used adaware & spybot as well as a few others that i cant remember the name off. Each one found different infections, but even after using them all still could not get rid.

Theres alot to it then just running the two programs, not sure if you are aware but Spybot has a 'advance' mode which gives you useful options such as looking at the registry startup list, this is where some spyware can reinstall itself apon reboot.
Just using this option has fixed alot of computers that have entered my path, also just looking for processes that shouldnt be running in the process list also helps, if you arent sure of the process just google it, nine times out of ten if its spyware it will be flagged up somewhere on google results
Sadly when things are too bad we have to fall back to Drew's good old fashion format c.

Its a brand new pc and i have a couple of spy things on there already... ill use the ones you recommended cheers

i use spybot and the webroot spysweeper systems, also another tip is porn sites are full of it and if you run a p2p sharing program such as kazaa,blubster,napster expect to find spyware there.
get rid of all traces,programs that may be causing it,run those programs, do a disk clean, then defrag and it'l be like new!
i did that to mine for that result anyways..

Microsoft Anti-Spyware is good like Ian says, but for things which are dug in 'deep', such as hijacked browsers etc, I use Bazooka, available from Download.com.
