We've used the word "charver" in newcastle for as long as i can remember but recently everyone seems to have started referring to neds/pikeys/ scallies as chavs. Is it a recent thing?

it started her about 4-5 years ago, they were called chavey's ( thiefs )

a new thing.

Used to call them all pykies, but now as the different classes have dabbled in anything "pyke" it has been re-classified chav to cover a broader horizon.

Or so i am led to beleive

The phrase 'chav' is becoming very chav and pikey indeed. Gay fashion word thats getting on my nerves. I say 'do as you likeys' - pikeys

me and my mates have been calling pikeys, chavvys for years, but the whole chav thing(for burberry hat wearers etc) only really came about in the last few months. There was an article in the sun about Tony Blair, basicly syin he was a chav cos he was wearing burberry t shirt, and there have been a few articles since.
There was even a survey in there a couple of weeks ago where you could work out how much of a chav you were
