For that budget I'd spend 180ish on the cam and the rest on memory cards and batteries.
Canon Powershot A75 is good, as are A70 and A80 if you can find them. A80 has a pop out screen on the back making it a bit more versitile.

I got Canon Powershot A300 and its a great camera! Only thing I'd like to change is the fact that you cant swap the lense over. I think it cost £300 but they are down to £200 now I think.

Stu - a colleague of mine has just bought an A80 from Argos for £200 with free 128Mb memory card. The web site is only listing A75 and A85 now for more money (newer versions) so it might be worth seeing what your local store still has.
Don't know if you found this on DPreview?

i bought a sony cybershot p72, 3.2 megepixels and have a 256mb card which holds roughly 500 pictures.
That was just under £250.00 the pair from the internet!
I used this camera in australia, look in my garage for some pics i took with it!

I got 1 3.2 mega pixel from Tesco for £60. Have a look in my garage, it does quite a good job.
