push the clutch down once to take out of gear, then again to put in gear. wat you had to do on old cars that didnt have a synchromesh.

Double clutching is best used when changing down to speed up the gearbox ready for the higher engine revs of the lower gear. Like Kris says, it harks back to the days when syncromesh was a luxury.

My old man used to be able to change gear without using the clutch, its just a case of matching your engine revs perfectly and having a good precise gear linkage, which is usually only found on a rwd car/van.
