Misses will be driving before long and she fancies a corsa...
Most prob will have £600-800 to spend £1000 max.

Seen a couple of corsas for £400-500 but are 100k+ milers, shall i stay away from these and look for the 50-80k milers for more money or will the 100k milers have plenty of life left in them (considering their small cars)

check for oil leaks or signs of leaks which were cleaned up around sump & gearbox. older 8v's have cork gaskets, they will seep oil lightly, sometimes the rocker & head may be stained with oil - only about £10 to sort out yourself.

check for over-noisy tapets, if its rattly during startup for about 20-30 seconds & then goes quietr, could be a lifter on its way or just may need an oil change.

Cambelt should of been chnged every 40k.

Check condition of all hoses, anything 80k up and the oil drain hose from the head to the block, breather hosr, and 2 coolant pipes feeding the heater-matrix inside the car are the ones which can corrode fastest, if you squeeze them when cold they should go back to there usual shape pretty quickish, if they stay squished for a few seconds & slowly come back into shape then there on there way.

Check for cracked b-pillars & rust, also rust on front chassis legs where there attached to lower cross-member, rus on the boot-hatch where the rubber-pipe is which has electrics & washer jet hose to boot lid. Can rust on the boot itself.

Do the usual £1 coin trick & just slide it between all the edges & joins of doors, etc, make sure all is even & level. If anything is out, could be sign of a smash.

Check pre-tensioners aven't fired (yellow tag on seat-belt buckle), also just rock the chair slightly, some front brackets can break off after high mielage & not being looked after well.

Start car up from cold, if there is blue smoke for about 1-2 mins from cold & it settles, sign of dodgy valve stem seals, if its smokey all through, piston rings maybe going, or headgasket. Check for any rattles which engine running & in neutral, also listen for any noise changes while in neutral & then pressing clutch. If there is a big difference, clutch bearings or soemthing else may be playing up, but its normal for there to be a very slight noise when clutch isnt pressed & it goes when clucth is pressed.

check all electrics, washer jets, wipers, etc.. tyre tread, brake condition, usual stuff like that also.

older vaux engines too are pretty much getting in thereprime @ about 80-100k, as they have more 'play' than newer engines, which have short running in periods.

Something which is at 100k with FSH & all receipts, etc, may be alot better than something with 50-60k with naf-all receipts. It's a case of finding something which has been well looked after & has all receipts for work carried out & services, etc...

personally I wouldnt recommend looking at a 1.2 8v - the 1.4 8 or 16v is far superior and isnt that much extra to insure

only difference is the extra 200cc engine capacity & more power, interior & exterior there the same (unless its an exclusive model or something).

What I menat by that was from longevity of use point of view - the 1.4 will last longer - Im pissed of with the serious lack of power of the 1.2 hence why Im selling - had it of been the 1.4 16v - Id keep it another 2 eyars till I finish uni

1.4 will not last longer as it all depends on wot state the engine is as it could of been ragged or looked after, engine size dont matter

Chassis legs are the big issue on Corsas of that age and mileage.

not the best pics, but you can see on the top most pic where the chassis-leg is attached to the lower-cross member where the rust is (dark brown area) and the lower pic, you can kind of make out the bubbling under the paint (its lighter-shade of red compared to the rest.

its also rusting around the engine mouts

I'll try get better pics later
