I'm selling my old Golf (ad on Club GTI forum) and have just had this conversation by email (you'll have to start with the bottom email and work up)
Dodgy or what? Why on earth would someone try and buy a car in another country that they've never seen and offer to send 4 times the asking price in advance?

Yes, good idea. If someone's genuinely interested in the car, presumably they'll be willing to pick up the phone.

Looking for around £900. It's in good nick for a 16 year old car and I've had a lot of work done to it including engine rebuild 30K miles ago. Nippier than the Mazda I bought to replace it, but that has PAS, so the girlfriend got her way

I don't get how it could be a scam. Sounds more like he's just winding you up. If he was to send you a cheque for £4500 how would that be illegal if he was buying your car?
Sounds to me like a 14 year old playing pranks thats not even interested in the car.
