this is a copy of a thread i've just posted on a golf forum, but activity is very slow, so thought i'd try here too.....

quote:

i'm a university student studying electronic and electrical engineering. I am currently choosing my project for my final year, and i'm doing a little research into my project ideas.

My favourite idea is to design and make an electronic golf scorecard. I am not a serious golfer, but do enjoy it and go quite regular. I know how annoying it is when you finnish the first hole and realise your pens ran out, or that neither of you have a pencil etc etc...

I would like your ideas into various functions of the scorecard. For example, it will be programmed so that you can choose between 9 and 18 holes, keep records for upto 4 players at a time, include handicaps, and running and/or total score and possibly for 2 rounds. There may also be a function to input the par values for each hole at the beginning, so you can keep track of birdies, pars, bogies etc.

I am trying to keep it as a universal scorecard, that can be used on any course, so things such as a rangefinder will probably be out of the specification. However, i have considered an uploading facility, whereby you could connect it to your computer, and upload the round(s) you have on the scorecard, this way automatically keeping track of your progress over the year. I'm not sure if this would be outside of my ability, but i'm definately considering it.

Please could you let me know any other ideas for different functions the score card could incorporate, any refinement of ideas i have mentioned above or any functions of scorecards already on the market which you think could be improved or chnaged into a more user-friendly or faster way

cheers

Dougie

When i play i dont usually mark the card as i go along anyway, i just remember how many over i am (but i play off 9 so it isn't too hard to remember)

I'm not sure on your electronic ability but a scorecard that works out how many Stableford points you have, how much over par you are (NET and GROSS).

You know when you play stableford competitions, you get 2 points for a NET par, 3 points for s NET birdie, 1 for an Double Bogie, 4 for an Eagle etc. So Level with your handicap on the round would be 36 points, quite a common competition format

oh right, as i said, i'm not a serious golfer, never played in competitions, just with workmates. I will look into stableford points. Depending on how well the project goes, this is the kind of extra feature i want to include

cheers

stableford points is the 1 but you will need 2 programe the par of each hole into your scorecard first so it will know how many points to give you.

I assume you'll be using a PIC microcontroller to do this? Very easy to integrate into a Hitachi LCD controller too which saves you hassle

I built a remote control system for an FM radio transmitter unit -- controls it over the microwave link from the studio for my 3rd year project, so if you need any help with microcontrollers drop me an email
