I'm thinking of selling my current PC setup and getting a laptop instead.
This would suit my current lifestlye better. Firstly, how much would I get
for my current setup (see below) and secondly, what sort of spec laptop can
I expect to be able to get with this money?

PC Spec:
AMD Athlon XP1500+ Processor
Gigabyte 7VTXH+ Motherboard
512MB RAM
40GB Maxtor Hard Drive
32MB GeForce2 MX 400 Graphics Card
DVD Drive
Samsung 16x 10x 32x CD Writer
Eizo F55S 17" Monitor

you will probably only get around the £450 - £500 mark from that spec

laptop for that, best bet would be to have a look on ebay as prices vary a hell of alot

Yeah but I've applied to be holiday rep, and if successful, then computer won't get used while I'm away anyway. And I'd rather have the convenience of using the laptop anywhere round the flat rather than being stuck at me desk.

Computers lose value dead quick !!! It really is a pain in the arse !!! Laptops are cool though, that's next on my list after a new car.

I was thinking around the £400 mark for my computer... then I can get a P3 800 laptop with DVD player which will be just fine as I only really use the internet and excel mostly. Don't use it for games at all.

AMD Athlon XP1500+ Processor: £35
Gigabyte 7VTXH+ Motherboard: £55
512MB RAM: £58
40GB Maxtor Hard Drive: £41
32MB GeForce2 MX 400 Graphics Card: £25
DVD Drive: £23 (assuming it's just a reader)
Samsung 16x 10x 32x CD Writer: £25
Eizo F55S 17" Monitor: £87

So, in total, for *BRAND-NEW* parts, that makes £349......second-hand, you'll be lucky to get £200-250, depending on condition.

Just to show how cheap computers are these days, if you know where to look, and don't mind a bit of "work" building it:

Case: Generic midi-tower with built-in 350W PSU & HDD cooler: £39.95
Motherboard: Asus A7V600 (8xAGP/LAN/USB2/ATA133/2*SATA/6ch-audio): £66.39
Memory: 512Mb PC2700 DDR-RAM: £54.93
CPU: AMD Athlon XP2400+ (2.00GHz): £63.73
Heatsink & Fan: Coolermaster sink/fan with manual speed-control: £6.45
Graphics: Gainward 128Mb GeForce FX5600-XT: £77.55
Hard Drive: IBM 80Gb Serial-ATA: £64.63
DVD/CD: Sony Combo (48W, 24RW, 48R, 16DVD-READ): £42.59
Floppy Drive: Sony 1.44Mb: £5.39
Monitor: iiyama 17" CRT 0.27dp: £89.30

Total: £510.91

Not a bad price, in my opinion, for a system with plenty of scope for upgrading...

Sorry Gareth, I have a habit of doing that!

I'd go with keeping it as a backup machine (if you're going to have broadband in the flat, use it as a webserver to chuck a website on?)

could do but like I said, applied to be holiday rep, and if I get the job, i'm gonna be out of the country for up to 9 months of the year, so the computer wouldn't be any use to me anyway.

I reckon I could sell it for aroud the £400 mark with printer, speakers and desk.

To be honest, you could probably sell it for £400 with just the printer......just chuck the advert in all the local papers and similar......there'll be plenty of interest from people wanting to grab a computer for their kids for Xmas, but don't want to pay through the nose from PC World (because they don't know any better).

£400 for a laptop, you're definitely looking at second-hand......and I'd be inclined to ask reason for sale.

Contrary to my previous statement, the cheapest laptop I can find so far is from PC World: a 128Mb Celeron 2.2GHz notebook with 30GB HDD, DVD-Rom & CD-RW......all for £599.99!

i got mine rebuilt by one of the engineers at work for 500 quid and a bottle of vodka for his troubles

it gets expensive when u have to buy the OS and shite, coz that costs a shed load!!!

If u want a laptop, id go for pentium m, seem to be the best from what ive looked into for customers etc. laptops are dirt cheap, you just have to know where to look

I don't need to worry about OS, software n stuff. I just need the laptop. been lookin on Ebay n stuff and I can roughly get a 1ghz laptop for between 4-500 quid.

If anyone knows anywhere else to look, let me know.

Cheers
