You can run 16 x 7's et45 down to 60mm with no probs. Ive ran my 16x7 et45's with 195/40 rubber as low as 80mm before with just arch skimming and de-bolting and they havent caught...

What width are your alloys, if they are 7in wide and et45 then your wont be able to go down 55mm enless your change springs in coilovers, trust me ive had many problems with mine

As you can see you cant wind the spring platform down any further than the wheel cuz theres no room, the yellow spring is a new sring i had to buy to get it about 55mm, very very very good ride quality though
This is how low it is with the front wound down as far as i can and also the back is as far as you can go but other possabilities with the back if needed

The problem with the coilovers is the width - as to get very low on the standard helper spring your wheel will be in the way as the pic shows. 49mm offset is probably not in your favour either as your wheel will be rather tucked in the arch.

Im running Spax front Coilovers (RSX KIT). My tyres (195/40 continentals)JUST catch the springs by 1mm If I wind them down real low. At the minute they are set at 60mm drop and the bottom spring seat just sits above the widest part of the tyre where it meets the rim so im OK. This is on a 7 x 16 et45 rim. If I want lower I have to use 3mm spacers which bring the wheels out to et42.

As Cheeky Charlie says you can buy springs of differing poundages i.e 175lb, 200lb, 225lb and also differing lengths from places such as Rally Design ( http://raldes.co.uk ) for about £10-£15 per spring.

This way you can chop and change if you wished, which means you may be able to wind the bottom spring platform up high enough to clear your alloy/rubber and then use a shorter spring to give you a lower drop. Or you have the option of using wheel spacers to give you clearance but you shouldnt need any worse an offset than et40 to give you coilover clearance with 7" wide rims.

you will need 3mm spacers as the wheels/tyres will most prob catch on the coilovers themselves. Depends on what bumpstops they use as to whether they'll scrub on arches. Mine were OK with 3mm spacers when lowered 75mm. Just play around with them...

Yes with coilovers you must remove the wheels to adjust them. You can try and do it with the wheels on, it may be possible but it will be very fiddly!
