Independant suspension
Stiffer shocks
Poly bushes
Stripped
Caged

1.8 VVC.......Probably do all that for a tab over a grand. 160BHP, under 1000KG

EDIT - Including the car

our 205 GTi was like that....

It was pretty stripped for road use though, with full cage etc... BUT it was just a case of feed it oil, fule etc and just thrash till the tracktime stopped.

Had to replace a few things, but it was generally easy on brakes and tyres.

The skyline went through a £240 set of front brake pads in about 3 events. Tyres about the same.

Saying that though... spending in the right areas will make it so much quicker where it counts. Forget about engine mods to start with. Get working brakes that will pull it up time and time again with no drama's. Cut slicks and DECENT suspension. Not a £300-£400 set of coilovers.

Then start bracing the car making it more ridged etc....

BUT - i couldnt be arsed driving something like that daily.

Ak - That was why i was thinking down the 106 VTS route.

Didn't want anything turbocharged for fear of big bills.

Ive explained that its possible to have fun on a bugdet but he will have to expect bills.

He has costed in brakes, tyres, suspension.

But something he can get in a drive and not worry about parts if it comes to it.

its going to be a very comprimised car :(

Track brakes - potential squeeling, cold use.... put up with for daily unless you swap out to road pads as and when.

Weight - track you'll want light as possible, but if its to be used on the road can you/they put up with that?

To do it properly you'd need to spend a fait bit more on parts to make it cope with city commuting as well as track abuse.

Old impreza would get my vote. quick. handles. BUT can be expensive to run compared to hatches.

ive also had a vts which was also a good car nice to drive everyday if you dont lower them too much and good on fuel but pedals are close together

my fav car has to be my old escort rs turbo
easy to get good bhp fun to drive never had a problem with mine running just under 200bhp had it 6 months never broke down doing around 200-250 miles pw

If you had to purchase a car which had to do the following;

Daily commute
To the shops
Hard on the track

With limited funds available for modification.

My ideas were;
106GTi / VTS
205 (but a bit old really)
Early Clio
Golf diesel.

Couldnt really think of anything else suitable.

What would you suggest and why?
