Last statistics I read said alarms help fuck all.

Only thing that works is properly securing your house the old fashioned way with proper locks on all doors.
An ideal locking system requires a key/code to open all doors and (large) windows from the inside, if fully locked.

There are a lot of ifs and buts - and i can see where you are coming from. Why waste money, no-one is going to care less about an alarm going off..

Another one in my defense, the burglar may actually be watching your movements - i.e when you leave the house, can they hear you set your alarm, do your neighbors work and so on.

Mistake you're making there is that burglar bill is actually looking for a box with a flashing light, not the sensors fitted inside your house......

Andy, if there is your house with no alarm and next door with an alarm which one is a burglar going to attempt to break into first? Assuming the burglar has a couple of brain cells...

The Mrs uses ours at night when i'm working away also.

If you want something to tell you someone has broken in when you're at home, get an alarm.

Otherwise don't bother. Anyone hearing an alarm generally assumes its a fault. IMO of course.

Visonic if you want a wireless and portable keypad, Pyronix if you don't mind the keypad being integral with the panel. Galaxy if you end up wired.

The wireless stuff is much better nowadays but wired is always best some as most applications.

Yale are electrical suppliers run of the mill low end. I'd imagine it does work just how well would be the issue.

I'm not sure if this is a Geek Day or a House Day topic but I figured its best here.

Having bought a new house, we feel it is probably a good idea to get an alarm of sorts. Does anyone have any recommendations?

We do have a cat and a dog, so something that is pet friendly would be ideal.

Are the wireless ones worth considering? If I were to go rob a house the first thing I would do is take a jammer with me in case their system was wireless

Any recommendations?

This looks aright:
