i would say voilent shaking when it fires up is most likely the smooth ignition is out of sync depending on what kinda boiler it is, does it have a pilot or automatic ignition??

My mums does that, is it an older system? On my mums you can visibly see the front cover vibrating and it has a violent shake at the start which causes the bang :|

thtas called kettling, its a build up of limescale in the heat exchanger of the boiler, due to the resistance caused by the limescale thw water stays in the heat exchanger longer and the water starts to boil, the banging and vibration is the water bubbling about inside.... like a kettle

My house does that also, nothing to worry about as Matt has said its just the pipes. mine has done it for many years and have had no problems :)

Pipes expand when they get hot, if they are touching each other or touching the joists they are on they creak, they move a hell of a lot,

I put a felt lagging material under them when I do them to stop it, the pipes can push the felt out though

If you like in a rented house, get the landlord to sort it.

When the heating is on there is a really strange sound like an old door creaking open come from the ceiling :boggle: It seems to be changing every day to faster and faster, and louder as well. Is it just pressure building up in the pipes? Heating has been on all day today and surely if it was water dripping from the pipes it would be starting to show wet or damp by now....
