Ohhh, i just searched for loft insulation regs & thats what came up :?

Said he would insulate the hatch & trim the edges of the hatch & loft, i think that means fit an edging strip?

Not too bad I suppose, certainly if you haven't got to lift a finger
Just make sure sure they fit a draft strip around the new loft hatch else you'll still loose a whole load of heat through the hole

ps. There isn't a requirement for 270mm at all. The requirement (which applies to new build houses or new extensions) states that you must meet a set thermal insulation value (called a U-value).

Some products can meet this U-value with very thin thicknesses, others need over 300mm to make the same. Between 250-270mm is common, but its not a requirement on a precise thickness

As far as i know its meant to be 270mm, thats what i've read everywhere anyhoo!

Just had a bloke out to do a quote...

3 Tier Ladder (as ceiling is 3m high)
Loft Hatch (made to any size, finished off around the edges & a wee stick thing to pull it down with)
Supply & fit insulation
Strip lamp fitted
fit 100Sq Ft 18mm flooring, for storage.

£575, should take them 5 hours to do.

Bargain i think, helps he has done a few peoples lofts we know i think!

Can Wait, was stressing about doing it all myself, didnt realise it could be sorted in one day for 600quid!

Joists are like 5cm i think.

did a little drawing on graph paper today, but realised i have no scanner, poop.

B&Q have a deal on at the min, 5.4sqM for 10quid, and its 200mm thich, so was just going to lay that between the joists, then at 90deg over the top again.

Planning on only using a small section for storage, so going to make so beams to go over the joists, then beams to go 90deg over those, with the 200mm stuff inbetween both, then some chipboard over the top for the storage stuff to go on.

I think.

How big are the joists you've got up there now?

You'll need to counter batten over the existing joists which will provide the cavity for your 'over' insulation which will obviously need to be as deep as the insulation is.

Do B&Q not do 100mm and 150mm insulation - if so I'd go with that to make 250mm.

Right, just been up in the loft, and theres like 25mm of insulation.

I've read that you need a min of 270mm now, 100mm between the joists & 170mm over the top of that.

B&Q have a deal on at the mo for some 200mm stuff, and with my calculations i need 62m2 to cover the whole loft, so thats only 40quids worth, which is a bargain!

Still need some 100mm stuff to go inbetween the joists too though.

Anyways, i want to know if anyone has done this themselves, im looking to board it out aswell, and it wasnt till i went up into the loft and measured up that i realised how tall the insulation would be.

I need to know how its done really, what size chocks people used, if you just put beams over the joists, or just little chocks spaced out?

Any help really to keep costs down!
