if you are bricking up a door and putting in a window, strictly speaking you would need planning for the change of use and the window. would require building warrant for full thing.

the consrtuction all depends on what us already there. either be suspebnded timber floor or concrete slab, both will require insulation

if its a stud wall it will require double sheeted on garage side for fire rating

if block work wall will require to have insulated plaster board on inside.

ceiling will require 250mm of glass wool insulation

all pretty straight forward. if you need to know anything else just ask

Apparently you should budget 4-5k for the full job.

Nicked from some gay diy forum -

quote:
Just in the final stages of a garage conversion. Its going to be a nice playroom for the kids.
Went though all official channels found out that i did not need planning permission but needed building approval (£259 approx).
Put a double glazed window where garage door used to be(had to have a trickle vent in it).
Needed to insulate all external walls and floor.
Raised floor by about 4" with joists and laid T & G chipboard on top.
Inspector recomended Kingspan to insulate the floor which is a kind of dense polystyrene(Inspector must have shares in the bloody company as it is expensive so used double thickness of normal 50mm polystyrene)
Radiator in the converted room must also have a thermostatic radiator valve.
Also needed a tile vent as i have a small tiled roof that juts out at the front of the garage.
Dont worry too much about following regs to the letter as once they have your money you will be lucky if you see an inspector round your property.

Think theres more to it these days than bricking up the entrance & building a partition wall. It needs to be done to building regs and you need building control approval, also Planning Permission. You'd maybe be best to get an architect involved, get some drawings done of plans & get him to sort the planning side as it can go back & forth as many times until their happy, you'll probably also need to raise the floor & fit a dpc if theres not already one.

Right double garage, want to divide it and keep one side as normal garage and the side with the door that goes into the house to become a bedroom/office studio.

What work is involved to do this properly?

will be removing one garage door and bricking the front with a window?

Any ideas where to start, what kind of people to get in for quotes etc?

also anyone done this?

thanks.
