Same here cosmo, i was going to box off inside the chimney and have a fire bowl but i kept thinking, what if i kicked it and set the living room on fire

What have u got - if uve got one?

something like a fire is one thing I would never try to do myself. Granted those gel fires look easy enough but I personally just wouldnt want to risk it!

I would get one then, stainless steel backdrop and tile everywhere else, or if u can afford it buy a marble surround

If not, and you want to keep costs down you could make a nice one from mdf for about £20 (simple box design, and paint it)

I quite like them, we bought a modern style leccy fire, but i dont use it because the electric meter spins round like god knows what when i turn it on

Needs to have ventilation or you will end up with a room full of smoke

I wouldnt have a mirror - too fragile and annoying to keep clean, imo a sheet of steel would look nice and modern

Are you going to tile the surround or buy a surround?

i cannot find a fire place i like so i have decided that i will create my own .
The design will be a shelf with a mirror behind it on the wall .It will then have a Gel fire box like below on it .What do people think ,any hazzrds?
