Originally posted by Dr Pepper I have been largely confined to using the bike indoors and going to the gym mainly due to the River Thames deciding to ruin all my routes. Saturdays weather convinced me it was time to get back out there and see how much damage Christmas, new years, a stag party and a wedding had done to my fitness. I thought about easing myself back but decided instead to do a dress rehearsal for lands end john o goats - So I fully loaded up the saddle bag with pretty much everything I will be taking - made a sat nav route to follow that went over white horse hill and a few other decent hills around here - then set off into the rain in full waterproof gear. The idea was to spin gently around the route at touring speed to mimic one of my days on the trip. I had not really factored in the 25-30mph winds that were in my face for much of the journey, or just how much of Oxford/Berkshire is still flooded. That wind was mental - struggling to do 10 mph downhill in places I have topped 30mph before .... Very happy with saddle bag - doesn't effect handling too much.....After 20 miles I noticed my rear tire was a bit flat - I pumped it up and also noticed my mudguard was missing a bolt which potentially could have been quite messy if the arm came off and went in the spokes ...no bother I thought - a cable tie will sort that - my smugness started to go when I realized I had everything In my saddlebag - apart from my tools and puncture kits which were sat in the garage at home! I managed to fix the mudguard with medical tape and energy gel as glue! The tyre seemed to be fine so I pressed on .... after 50 miles it was obvious I had a slow puncture - which I proceeded to stop and have to pump up every half mile for the next 5 miles - until it blew up on me 5 miles from home .... had to be rescued by the team car(cheers mum) [Edited on 24-02-2014 by Dr Pepper]
