If it's an option I'd sack the smith machine off and opt for squat rack. Legs shoulder width or slightly further apart, keep eyes forward and slighlty up and do the movement as though you are going to sit down on a chair making sure your knees aren't moving forward past your toes.

I'm same Matt, my range of motion is woeful!

I do it like you but dont go as low as the person in the gif, i only go till my thighs are parallel to the ground.

while at the gym yesterday, there was 2 guys doing squats on the smith.

the had their feet in front of them and was sitting down down into it then going back up.

were they just complete retards or am i missing something.
