Should go back to 1-11 IMO

as JR said it used to be the number according to where you were playing. ie; gk 1, defenders 2,3,4 & 5 (depending on formation) etc. and people have come to expect defenders to be 3/4 etc and strikers 9/10.

I never said theres a law about it just ina raditional sense there are positions associated with numbers (echo!)

Having a #9 as a RB is very strange and not exactly common!

i think everyones views would be different if say Wayne Rooney asked for the No.1 shirt? I though it was weird him having the number 9 but i think that just means that Mourinho will bring in a new No.9 (striker) in January or next summer.

Each number 1-11 has a position which is assosiated with it in my eyes but theres no laws stopping people having anything different i suppose.

anyway, dont know if any of that made sence but please take notice of my sig (below) :)

lets say in injury time of a cup final, losing 1-0, you put your big center half upfront (as some teams do) does this mean he should change from a number 6 shirt to a number 9?

It was when Ronaldo was signed to Inter, as part of the terms he insisted on the No.9 shirt (previously held by the legend - Ivan Zamarano), Fat Ronaldo got his way so Bam Bam Zam asked for number 18 and put a + sign between the numbers (1+8=9 obviously :0 )
I have a Inter away shirt with Zamarano 1+8 on the back and it's my favourite footy shirt :)

No but for a defender to wear 9 is an incredulous decision!!

it use to be you play for the shirt, so before you had to asign squad numbers you had 1-12
