Originally posted by Ellis I was initially siding with NR on this given he was in front. I felt LH was driving into an ever reducing wedge, which he should've known with his experience. After reading the sporting regs, I'm more in the 50/50 camp and I believe the stewards got it right.
FIA Sporting Regulations Paragraph 27.7 Any driver defending his position on a straight, and before any braking area, may use the full width of the track during his first move, provided no significant portion of the car attempting to pass is alongside his. Whilst defending in this way the driver may not leave the track without justifiable reason. For the avoidance of doubt, if any part of the front wing of the car attempting to pass is alongside the rear wheel of the car in front this will be deemed to be a ‘significant portion’.
NR was defending his position but LH had, IMO, a 'significant' portion of his car alongside. The pictures I've seen show the front wing level with NR rear tyre whilst both cars are within the white lines. Overall, I'm glad it was declared a 'racing incident' and we move on with neither driver receiving a penalty or reprimand. Monaco should be interesting next weekend
