Print and display dpi will continue to increase. Storage gets cheaper and processors get faster so the bigger files become less of an issue.

You only get 1 chance to capture all the detail you can.

I think in terms of pixels and dpi, once you exceed the resolution of both realistic print and displays it just hogs massive resources and storage. I produce 16mb raw files and 7mb jpegs at max on my D700. 36mp extrapolated would be around 21mb an image at max setting for a Jpeg, god knows how much for a raw file.

Why do normal mortals only need 12mp?

As long as it's not at the expense of quality you can never have too much detail.

D300s has been around a while and vids ive seen from that dont look any worse than this.
