Program mode is just Auto, it selects what it thinks is the correct aperture and shutter speed but you can change it. In Auto its locked.

That's just the noises it makes, shutter noise, beep when you press buttons and video playback.

I think what Butler is trying to explain is that a larger aperture lets in more light, which means you can use a shorter shutter speed and vise versa but a large aperture will have the background more blurred where a small aperture will try to keep as much as possible in focus.

The next confusing bit is that a large aperture is a small f number. So I'm guessing your camera will be similar to mine, going from f3.2 - f8, in which case f3.2 is the largest aperture, which lets in most light and has a more blurred backgroud. And then f8 is the smallest aperture, meaning less blurred background and lets in less light so a higher shutter speed will be needed

If you put it in aperture priority (A) then you decide the size of the aperture by scrolling through f3.2 - f8 and the camera works out the shutter speed.

Shutter priority (S) is the opposite, you set the shutter speed and the camera sorts the aperture.

Manual (M) you do set both, probably best getting used to S & A first

Program (P) I've never used and I'm not 100% what it is so I'll leave that for someone else to explain

Aperture isnt the only factor that affects depth of field. Changing the aperture changes the amount of light that is allowed in after the shutter is open or something like that.

On aperture priority make sure the aperture is turned down to the widest settings, should be about 3.5 maybe? Assuming its a bridge camera, the fujis are great. Its not crap mate you just gotta learn the ins and outs.

If its a Fuji turn the round dial to the " A " position go into menu and select ISO 100 and invest in a tripod

have to agree,

Set it to Av or something, Drop the ISO down a touch and stick it on a flat surface/Tripod

Did you take them auto and handheld?

If so thats the problem, looks like it's bumped the iso up quite high and point and shoots are balls at anything resembling a high iso.
