I have a D40 and you'll find the settings far more sensitive than they are on any compact/bridge camera.

Trial and error will see you do well.

d50's are easier to use, but take the d40 for the long run

does this only apply to the older lenses though?

Yeah, most new ones are AF now anyway. I don't think you would be disappointed with a D40x, got good reviews everywhere :)

decided to go for the Canon EOS30d.

i know its a more advanced camera but atleast i don't have to change in the long run.

Thats not a bad price, you will be getting a very good camera for under £400

30D is abit much for a newbie to digital photography.

Also where you seeing the 400D for £430 for the body. Mine cost £415 for body and lens from Jessops!

sorry price for 400d body only is £369.99 at EmpireDirect

the problem i've got is EOS30d i can get for £400 with a 18-55mm lens.

I also looked at the EOS400d and the body alone is costing me £430.

Can't i use the 30d as a learner camera? or are the settings too advanced?

I've just got the EOS400D to learn and fiddle with (also a beginner), seems an excellent piece of kit, not sure how long will take me to get the best out of it though

The 30D is pretty advanced for a beginner.

Maybe the Canon 400D would be more what your after. It's an excellent body that would just require lens upgrades for what you need.

of course the 30D is also excellent.

However I'm a Nikon man and would buy the D200.
