It's not that complicated. When I do club photography I have the flash on a cord. Hold it in 1 hand. Camera in the other.
Takes no longer to take a picture.
It's like this: http://tullianography.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/dsc1742.jpg

doing the 100 strangers challenge you don't really have time to be setting up off camera flash and triggers, that starts makig the portraits 'posed' for, thats not the idea.

You're right. I only actually checked the exif on a few but those all said Off, Did not fire.

Portraits can be improved by using a cord or wireless triggers/receivers to get the flash off the camera. Makes the faces look less flat.

Like this...

I would say quite a few, if not all, look flash lit.

It looks like you used natural light so far which is fine. A lot of people prefer that, but you can get some cool effects by shooting into the sun and using off camera flash to fill in the light.

Do you have an external flash?

what advice would you give me for my next portrait pix?

Okay, I get it, but i'm sure i've seen some of your other pictures and they're much better than these portraits.
Technically, some of them are pretty poor.

Good on you for doing this project to improve the social and technical skills though.

Edit: Sorry, I may have been thinking of someone else when I said i've seen your other work.

Fair doo's, but to be honest a lot of them are just "snaps" of portraits.

I worked at TITP a few years ago and took about 900 pics of people over the weekend. I basically completed this challenge 9 times over.

I think you should keep taking pics until you have 100 ones you're really happy with. Not just 100 you've taken.

ps. I've definitely seen #4 before. Have you posted some of these up before?

you need to read the concept of 100 strangers, then tell me what you think.
www.100strangers.com

ps: they are all strangers who I asked if I can take their picture.
standing outside a night club taking a shot of everyone isn't the idea

look what others do too....

2, 22, 34.....

Out of focus sounds harsh now I read it back, but those are missing focus on the eyes - with such a shallow DOF those seemed to have hit either just before or just after the eyes.

I really like this idea, some of the results work well - nice not to have just a straight run of pretty women, instead mixing it up with musicians and random old people.

Theres a few slightly out of focus, and a few where you've departed from the head shot (ie. further away so head, shoulders & chest) but I don't think thats a major problem at all.

Good job :)
