Slight flaw in your plan Moony1234:

"The mobile you are locating needs to be switched on and within network coverage"

So if your battery is dead or you live in the middle of nowhere, then you're fucked!

Very insightful, what has it to do with this though?

Thread title - Dont Want to pay hundreds for a fancy tracking device?

his answer - some crap about a phone

My reply in relation to the statement of the thread title - Drive at the speed limit

Its not about jamming laser camera's etc.

Its about finding your car if it gets stolen :S

i suggest u mail me on munchie@corsasport.co.uk about this matter. keep in touch bud this is a very very good idea that will and can work !

yup :D u could maybe get ur hands on a load of old nokias, sell em with sims, phone charger, switch :D i personally wouldnt know what im doing with that side of things.

Im gonna get local electrics garage to run the charger from battery to boot then hide the phone in the boot somewhere, possibly steal ur idea and get a switch on the wire bout 1/4 of the way and mount it below the dash :]

Its a shed load cheaper than a tracker and will defo pay itself off if ur car gets nicked ;)

grab the baseball bats, jump in mates car and goto location :D

old nokia fones are ok for trickle charging. like 3210's and also 5110s etc...i can get batterys cheap for these neway and i can also remove the ringers if need be...

mobile modding is my side of things... i am very intrested in ure theory tho moony...maybe a switch can be used to turn the charger on and off?! batterys last about 5/6 days with no incoming calls etc neway so it will b ok to leave this fone in the car hidden away.....

some phones dont mind being "trickle" charged. Problem is how to know which do and which dont!

Sounds good - the only prob is keeping the phone charged... If you leave it on charge for too long it'll kill the battery... If you don't charge it - it'll run out of battery!

either way results in possible loss of car...

Unless I suppose if you just connected it to your car's battery like you said it may be fine... I dunno.

Sounds interesting anyway

Sounds like a good idea!

I've came up with a solution!

Firstly you'll need a crappy mobile phone [get an old ass PAYG one from ebay.co.uk for like £15] it must be one that doesnt require a minimum top-up each month and doesnt require u to make xx amount of calls.

Cost so far: £15+ [depending on phone u choose!]

Next you need an in car charger for it, say £5? I advise you get this wired up to ur battery and HIDE the mobile.

Next!

Goto: https://www.mapamobile.com

Register online for £29.99

This includes:

the registration of your mapAmobile account
£6.00 of credit
A subscription to locate one mobile phone for one year
[Note: 12 month subscription after the 1st year is £10/year]

And thats it!

Now if your car gets stolen, log on to mapamobile.co.uk, and hit track, 30p will be deducated from your "credit" [not credit on your phone!] and a location will be given !

You can also make a location request by telephone or by text message.

The phone must be on O2, Vodafone, Orange or T-Mobile.

Obviously the phone must be turned on and within network coverage.

You can also do Periodic location checking which will notify you when a phone moves out of a specific area.

Total Cost:

£15+ for phone
£5 for in car charger
£24 for service [deducating the credit given]

Total: £44

Cost per request: 30p

Money saved over a tracker device: Approx. £500.

Im certainly doing it when i get my new car, whats your thoughts on this folks? :)
