HP ProBook on HUKD for £299 (http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/hp-probook-450-g2-299-97-saveonlaptops-2362805) and the spec doesn't seem too bad.

You need a £180 laptop, i3 chip, 4GB RAM and upgrade the hard drive to a 250GB SSD. Total cost, £250. Will be good for a few years.

Doesn't need to a Pro anymore... Surface 3 would be fine for mainly document and internet use.

quote: A Surface Pro would be the only option if you need to use (full blown) Excel; Android or iOS doesn't particularly cater for (proper) office applications. Robin - Look at Dell; generally pretty solid and reliable and aren't too expensive. Spec-wise look for something Intel i5/i7 (don't go AMD); 6GB+ RAM; storage - ideally go for a SSD/solid-state drives (for that budget you'd probably get a 128 or 256GB, if you're lucky, SSD), however if you need storage (for music, films etc) then a mechanical drive (1/2TB) is the only real option unless you can up the budget to either allow for a bigger SSD or to go with a laptop that offers dual-bay hard drives (ie - small SSD drive for your OS and programs, then a large mechanical drive for storage) but it'll be well past the £5/600 budget.
