Essentially yes, or you could buy a cheap external HDD and format it and copy everything onto that/copy all the movies to your laptop and format the hdd then copy back.

So now I just need to find a memory stick haha. If that works, will I need to reformat my hard drive and start over again with the films?

Reformat a pen drive to FAT, stick the mkv on it, try then

Had a go at this before work today, ended up using Handbrake because I couldn't get the MP42MKVac3 to open? I downloaded it, but couldn't actually find the program to open up?
Also, converting it to MKV on Handbrake didn't make any difference, still doesn't show up on my hard drive when browsing on my Blu-ray player. There's just a file named 'buda' which has nothing in it, and doesn't even exist as a folder that I have created? It also took 3 hours to convert one film, I don't fancy having to do that for every one

Ok, cheers guys, I'll give it a go tomorrow morning when I'm not at work! I'm guessing they both support Mac?

Make sure you're the external drive has been formatted using a support file system - most likely FAT/exFAT etc.

Edit - Looks like the MP4 container isn't support; have a look at remuxing the MP4 file to a MKV file (using something like MP42MKVac3) - that way you don't have to re-encode and lose quality. Failing that, use Handbrake to re-encode the MP4 to MKV.

Ok cheers! What's the best way to convert them?

http://www.trustedreviews.com/sony-bdp-s4500-review says "On the video side we were able to stream MKV, AVI, XviD, WMV and AVCHD"

Try putting one of your files on a usb drive and see what happens. Might be something to do with the formatting of your HDD, but seeing as they are MP4 convert them to MKV or AVI and try again

I've got a portable external hard drive with some films and tv series on which I've been having to watch through my MacBook, as my old Blu-ray player didn't have a USB socket. I went out and bought a Sony BDP-S4500 which claims to have USB play back, and lists the file type of all my films, but it isn't showing any of the files when browsing on my Blu-ray player? Does anyone have any advice or had the same problem before and managed to sort it?
