	I've run with Avira for years now with very few issues edit - although I use XP and 7, can't comment on 8 Also run Spybot and Malwarebytes every month or 2 to clean out any buildup of shit that gets through [Edited on 12-11-2014 by dannymccann]

	Just stick with Defender & MSE here :) no problems. Everything else seems so bulky...

Not all viruses/malware make themselves apparent. Keeping your OS and software up to date with the latest security patches is a practice I'm sure you follow; but good behaviours alone are not enough to protect you. Here's an analogy: You might like to insert your penis into a different woman every week without using a condom, and you may have been lucky enough to have seemingly never caught anything as far as you know - 'little pow' continues to function as normal and it doesn't burn when you pee; happy days! Unbeknownst to you, you've got Chlamydia - which I'm sure you don't need me to tell you most people don’t experience any symptoms so are unaware they are infected. In any case, despite carrying on in a manner that some would deem risky, one would hope that you'd still take measures to check how riddled with AIDS you are on a regular basis to avoid passing on your filthy infections to anyone else. Yes, I did just compare using the internet without antivirus software to having unprotected sex with strangers. Or to put it another way, by running your web-enabled computer without antivirus you're essentially swinging, bareback, on the internet and every time you download a file or insert a USB stick is tantamount to dipping your hatless willy in a dirty skank. 	Based on the real world detection stats from the various places that do this sort of thing, I'd give Avira Free a whirl, seems to be on par with the paid equivalents: AV-Test: 100% March/April 2014 http://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/windows-8/april-2014/avira-internet-security-2014-141491/ AV Comparatives: 99.2% September 2014 http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php (admittedly these results are from their paid Internet Security product, but this is merely the antivirus engine with some value-add guff like anti spam, credit card protection, system tuning etc. - they're not going to maintain two separate versions of their antivirus engine, one slightly hobbled to give away for free, that's just not how it works) [Edited on 11-11-2014 by evilrob]

	Avast seems to rape my disk usage upon start up, a quick Google sees other Win 8.1 users affected the same. You also get pissing audible updates telling you the databases have been updated. Windows defender ok to use then? Might sack off Avast if it is

	BitDefender 2015 is generally considered to be the best, plays nice with Windows 8 - low performance / memory impact. It has been available for as little as a tenner from time to time.
