What about with chromecast, seems a cheaper alternative?

You can also play Afdah from an iPad to the tv using ATV.

If you're talking about the Cartoon HD app then yeah it does Airplay to the ATV. You won't be able to Airplay Sky Go from the iPad at least without a Jailbreak. No idea what tweaks are around nowadays. Not sure if that can be done with Google Chrome and Chromecast via the laptop.

Looks like it could? Google shows it being able to mirror the laptop.

Just not sure if cartoon hd will mirror from ipad?

I see air parrot the other day while looking. For next to no money sounds ideal!

iPad -> Apple TV works well due to "AirPlay" functionality.

Macbook -> Apple TV works well as per above.

Any given other laptop -> Apple TV: your mileage may vary. From iTunes works fine; if you want to mirror your Windows desktop you may need a third party utility like Air Parrot:

I have a surplus to requirements 3rd gen Apple TV in good nick, but I've lost the box. U2U me with a sensible offer and it's yours.

Having just cancelled my sky sports and movies I'm in the market to get something to quickly stream from laptop and iPad to the tv

Is Apple TV ideal for this? Wanna just turn on tv and it's ready to go etc.
