I tookl delivery of my TEAC D200 today and set it up just with 2 speakers I had to hand for the time being and as John said for £100 you really cant go wrong.
TEAC is the brand but the unit is basically Onkyo inside.
Im not sure if they are still available at £100 but i purchased mine from here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110992256529
Failing that then this is a good unit and team it up with some decent 2:1 speakers and your away.

I've just bought a teac ag-d200 because my old onkyo has developed a fault on 1 channel. It's amazing for £100 and will more than suffice until I upgrade. If that helps with a buying decision.

Stereo will never be a movie setup, it will always be a music setup.
Want a movie setup? You've got to have at least 5 speakers and a sub as well as all the wires that it takes. Sorry.

Set of Boston SoundWare S's (£300/350) and a decent AVR; soundbar is a side-step rather than a step-up to your TV.

Soundbar, no point cluttering the place up with speakers and subs, if your not gonna maximise its use due to being in said flat.

I'm looking at getting some audio kit to go with the new TV, as it has crappy speakers as standard!
My question realtes to getting the sound 'out of' the TV. I see some AV receivers that take all the HDMI leads in and then just sends the picture and sound up through one cable, and you do the switching on that unit. Then I see other systems like soundbars that just have one optical input. So I assume you take an optical feed from the TV to the soundbar and whatever would normally be coming out of the speakers for that source gets fed to the soundbar instead?
My assumption is that the AV receiver option is going to give the best sound?

Bear in mind the following points
I live in a flat so it will never be turned up loud
I live in a flat so the sub will normally be on its lowest setting, probably adding nothing to the sound
I like a nice neat setup, I don't want lots of cables etc everywhere
I am leaning towards the bookshelf speaker idea or the soundbar.
My main uses are gaming, TV and Movie watching. It would not be a music setup, just home cinema type use.
Drunkenfool may have a Sony amp for a decent price, I shall wait and see. That may sway my decision making if I get start building the system cheaply :)
