LCD coils are a pita, soldering iron job, I thought only the 3GS were affected though.

ah yeah my cuz did say he may have wet it with smashed screen ,what does that mean?

Play.com about £24 for full LCD etc not bad quality and good fit.

If backlight does not work, its normally water damage to the LCD coil....If you change the front screen, the backlight may still not work

I have an iphone 4 somebody gave me with a completely smashed front and rear, the backlight doesnt work. does anybody have a link for the screen etc. loads on ebay so bit confused

If the lcd isn't cracked you can do the outer glass on it's own fairly easily.

It's a bit fiddly when you're putting it back though because you can't push too hard or you'll crack the new one, but it can be done.

Can be done but need to use a hairdryer to take the touch screen off....

Best ofd buying a whole unit to replace your screen...

I have an iPhone 4 (not 4s) with a cracked screen (glass only). Does anyone know if this can be replaced as just the glass, or if the lcd needs replacing with the glass?

I've looked on other sites and can't see anything about the glass only being replaced, but have bought a (possibly the wrong) part from eBay where it is just the glass, and know there are some technical people on here.
