This might be useful, depending on what you're trying to create: http://phonegap.com/

OK I just downloaded Xcode from the Mac App Store so I'll see how I get on with that before paying for the license. :)

Wish me luck

Yeah to release an app onto a device you need a license, but my point is - you don't need it to make the app.

Just saying, if you're doing it in Objective C it's a fairly steep learning curve and you may want to wait until you've made the app before you pay.

yes you still require the SDK license.

I recently bought a MacBook Pro so I'm sorted on that front.

So if I wanted to make a free app would I still have to pay the £99 then?

To be honest. I wouldn't bother paying any money at all until you've made an app worth selling.

You don't need to pay for the app store licenses to just build the thing, only to publish it. Most people fail before the thing gets finished.

You'll also need a mac for development, so if you don't have one, that's also some upfront cost.

To test and publish your app, you need to be a paid up Apple Developer - the cost is £99. Been looking at it myself as it could prove problematic for a current project.

I looked into this extensively when I wanted to do the folder lock app.

It may have changed as it was 12 months ago, but there was an intitial charge of £100 for the development software/licence and then its worked on a percentage. 70% of the fee you put up in the store... example £1.00... you get 70p, apple gets around 20p, admin stuff 2p, development software 2p, then creditcard companies and other people get the rest.

As I said, it may have changes, as there has been a flurry of new apps recently, so may not be the initial fee anymore.

Something I've been meaning to have a go at as a hobby is to write some iOS apps.

Now assuming I know how to write an iOS app (I don't yet but for the purpose of this thread I do  ) how does one put their apps on to the App Store? Do you have to pay Apple some money to do this?
