Galaxy S has a good camera, but no flash...

Desire has a 5MP Camera with Flash

Latest 2.2 update for the Desire also allows 720p video recording.

tbf theres not much else to do really worthwhile once your phone is rooted.

android is a far cry away from the good old days of flashing new roms on windows mobile.

rooting whilst enabling a few intresting things to be achieved isnt that good imo of course, certanly never really bothered with much stuff after i rooted my hero.

rooting allows you to do more things with the phone, extreme theming, etc... ROMS are the software the phone runs, people make different styled and themed ROMS to suit there needs or give you more features than normal.

If you're not one for messing about, then to be honest, I'd recommend the Desire... Purely because all the widgets and HTC Sense just pish all over TouchWiz

i have no knowledge of phones, what does all this root and ROM stuff mean?

Only issue I see with the Samsung, is there TouchWiz UI leaves alot to be desired... I've tried it myself and really did prefer the vanilla launcher, or LauncherPro...

Specs-wise... Yeah, its a bit better than the Desire or N1 (purely due to the graphics chip in the Galaxy S), but other than that, not much in it...

End of the day, it's your preference...

Go for the Samsung (as mentioned, there first major smartphone) and probably get stuck with no support a bit down the line... (not looked into how the rooting/rom development side of things is though)

Or go for the Desire, which doesn't have a full root *yet* (no R/W to /system), but there are plenty of custom ROM's available, and plenty of devs working on it... BUT is very close to the N1 in regards to hardware specs, so porting N1 ROM's or building from AOSP will be much much easier.

tbh, both phones are much more feature-friendly than the iPhone4.

the galaxy s is a very very good phone. hardware is spot on, and the os is bob on.

tbh, nowadays, anything that has android in tends to be uber good.

Pah, let the fan boys have their opinion.
Anything other than an iphone 4 is not worth considering.

no its not they have had quite a few, some older ones on windows mobile and quite a few devices on android now, infact the galaxy s is a direct upgrade from the previous galaxy handset.

see refrence for android devices

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Android_devices#Smartphones

have a look at some of the reviews on youtube it looks very very nice and has recieved quite high regards as far as reviewers for tech sites go, i would have one myself but still have a year on my contract :(
