thats what i thought but this one doesn't. i've just stuck a wireless network card in my dads pc that i had at work. i reckon i can set everything up from my laptop then he can connect wirelessly to his router. i'd rather use ethernet though if i can.

There's no real rules for the light, you can't really use that for diagnosis.

Plus there are many other things it could be in the software which would cause problems.

If the laptop connects fine and goes on the internet, get them both connected then on both do a

Start - Run - cmd

ipconfig

and paste the results of both in here.

make sure his network settings are set as default. if the ip address is manually set incorrectly then it wont work.

I'm trying to set my Dads internet up and i'm having some problems. He has a modem that we are trying to connect to his desktop pc with an ethernet cable. am i right in thinking that the pc should detect when an ethernet cable is plugged in automatically? what lights on his ethernet port should come on when i plug it in? i get one steady light on when i plug it in and windows isn't detecting any new connections. I think his ethernet port is knackered but i'm not sure.

any help would be great as i'm clueless where to go from here.
