Just to update - I have installed Vista (Home Premium) with OEM key and Retail DVD and it worked fine for me.

I'm not 100% on vista, I've never used a vista oem cd, defo worked with xp though.

No you don't, if he has an OEM key stuck to his machine he's probably got an OEM machine, in which case any OEM disc should work.

yes then u need a bios hack bit software, hjave used it but pain in the arse when it comes to updates

You don't need recovery discs either, any oem cd would work, they just check the BIOS, don't need a key.

It shouldn't work, it definitely didn't with XP, don't think I've tried with vista though

I don't think it knows about what kind of disc you've used. I've used several different discs for reinstalls and the thing that matters is the serial number.

Is this possible with Vista?

I want to do a clean install of Vista on my laptop without all the bundled shit that comes on the restore discs. I have the OEM key on the laptop base, and I have a normal retail DVD.
