Your gonna need something to process it, easiest and cheapest is to buy something with the dvd player i think.

Just make sure it has optical or worst case digital coax

£150 for a surround sound system, but in all honesty i dont really need a dvd player.

So possibly worthe getting some speakers, i looked at ones you get for pc's which say 2.1 or 5.1 and they can be used with TV but again they dont have optical, so how are they actually 2.1 or 5.1 if they dont have the connectors

You need either optical spdif or hdmi to get 5.1. You can get 5.1 phono's but the ps3 and your tv won't output via that so it's not a choice.

Right i was gonna get myself a dvd player with surround sound but decided against it as the dvd player only has phono in sockets which i was told would mean if i plug my ps3 into it, only stereo sound will come out. not true 5.1 or 2.1.

I assume its because its going through phono leads.

so ive been looking at just getting some speakers to go from the back of the tv to play everything through, but if i was to get a 5.1 or 2.1 speaker system, would this also need a optical in socket to play the true sound or would phonos from the back of the tv to the speakers work the same.

im confused
