If you could keep the hifi, and it has external aux input, then you could just get an iPod dock.

Make sure your iPod is compatible too, bought the new shape nano, a docking station, and the device that lets you play it in the car. Niether of which charge the ipod  asked in apple about it and he said that they've changed the pins in the new models.

^ You can go into most stores and put your ipod in the dock to try it out as well :)

I was looking into these not so long ago, and found that not many came close to the Bose. Im am only talking from what i have experienced in the likes of Comet, Currys, PC World, etc...

Anyway...the best for the money I found, and bought myself was the Creative I-Trigue 3000i. Very nice sound, very loud, and plenty of depth to the audio :)

Cost me 69.99 / 79.99 (Cant remember which) from PC World in the end :) Highly Recommend

We have 2 Bose sound docks at home(the non battery type ones) and can't fault them. The sound is very good, not to large and a nice simply easy design/look. Although I am aware that they are not the best according to tests.

But we got both of them for nought so I ain't complaining.
